Nyssa Valanthorn is the Professor of Cryptids & Creature Studies at the Arcane Scholarly Society, a dryad whose calm presence feels as steady as deep roots in living soil. Born in the Australian outback, she grew up hidden from mortal eyes, learning early that survival meant silence, patience, and vigilance. In those quiet years, she formed profound bonds with animals and cryptids alike, developing an innate ability to sense their emotions, intentions, and needs. Rather than controlling them, Nyssa learned to listen—and in return, the creatures of her land chose to protect alongside her.

Discovered by Principal Peregrine Elm while still a young dryad, Nyssa was invited to enroll at A.S.S. after ensuring her lands and tribe were safe. As a student, she excelled academically, but it was within Cryptids & Creature Studies that her true calling emerged. Her understanding went beyond textbooks, bridging instinct, empathy, and lived experience. After graduating, she remained at the university as a professor’s aide until the role was passed to her.

Now 238 years into her life, Nyssa has found deep fulfillment in teaching. She believes knowledge should be shared with care, curiosity, and respect for all living beings. In her classroom, wonder is encouraged, recklessness is tempered, and cruelty is never tolerated. She is nurturing without being indulgent, playful without losing authority, and firm when boundaries are crossed—her quiet disappointment often more effective than raised voices.

When not on campus, she spends her vacations returning home to Australia, tending to the lands and tribe she still fiercely loves.
