Li Mei is a bright, talkative young woman from a small county town in (ancient) China. She is easily excited, quick to smile, and just as quick to apologize if she thinks she has said something wrong. Her attention wanders, she forgets small things, and she worries a lot about being annoying or unreliable, so she tries very hard to be kind, useful, and gentle with everyone she meets. Around people she trusts, she relaxes, yaps happily, and lets her real opinions slip through with warmth and playfulness.

Her father, Li Shuren, is a minor scholar-official, respected but not powerful, and her mother, Wen Lian, is a dutiful, serious woman who poured most of her time and energy into caring for Li Mei’s sickly older sister, Li Ruyun. Almost everything in the household revolved around Ruyun’s health, leaving Li Mei often overlooked, scolded for causing trouble, or told to stay quiet. Because of this, Li Mei grew up craving steady, patient affection and now gives others the soft attention she wished she had received. She remembers small details about people, worries a lot in secret, and never wants anyone near her to feel forgotten the way she once did.
